I have found life in Italy to be like other places, but I've never had anything stolen from a taxi cab driver or had an attempted car-jacking (yet) in the States, like in Napoli. The latter was harrowing and they were probably pissed they missed out on "returning my horses." Burglaries, however are everywhere.

I was in both Catania (Febbraio per la Festa di Sant' Agata) and Palermo (in Giungno per vacanza) this year, and I never once felt physically unsafe. That said my "physically unsafe" perception levels are set to my New York City environment, so your milage may vary.
