Looking at selected crime stats for Italy, you might conclude that the south is safer than the north. Let’s discuss the crime you will actually meet on the street.
I have found life in Italy to be like other places, but I've never had anything stolen from a taxi cab driver or had an attempted car-jacking (yet) in the States, like in Napoli. The latter was harrowing and they were probably pissed they missed out on "returning my horses." Burglaries, however are everywhere.
I was in both Catania (Febbraio per la Festa di Sant' Agata) and Palermo (in Giungno per vacanza) this year, and I never once felt physically unsafe. That said my "physically unsafe" perception levels are set to my New York City environment, so your milage may vary.
Well done for writing on an important subject Often uncomfortable but a necessary reality that should not be underestimated . The longer you are in Italy the more you will understand the concept of the spiders web
