Be interesting to see how this correlates with Left and Right in political affiliation/orientation. Umbria is a wonderful place, but Lefties are usually chronically miserable, in my experience, and it's a very pinkish sort of place politically.
Interesting theory, Hilary, so I tested it. Umbria actually does fine: Perugia 54.2 and Terni 54.4, both above the national 53.8. The red belt as a whole indeed comes last at 52.6, but the Veneto, Christian Democrat for forty years and Lega ever since, is right behind it at 53.5. Rovigo, in particular, is dead last in Italy for both friends and neighbors. There's also the ecological fallacy lurking when we approach that correlation: even if a province leans left, we don't know it's its leftist voters that are giving the low scores in the census.

1. Weekly Mass attendance
2. Birth rate
3. Percentage of primary school children per household
